Did you know that 7 to 8 thousand years ago, the Spanish were the
first humans to harvest honey? However, in the past few years, bee colonies have
been on the decline and this isn't a good thing because honeybees are important
pollinators of crops, fruit and wild flowers and are indispensable for a
sustainable and profitable agriculture as well as for the maintenance of the
non-agricultural ecosystem. The Good News - is that scientists have isolated the
parasite Nosema ceranae (Microsporidia) affecting the Spanish honey
bees and they then treated the infection with complete success. With the
magic of the macro-lens, we can see a Spanish honey bee - hard at work!
