This term, I am diving fully into the world of 19th-century Spanish Romanticism. Given the political turmoil we see in our world today, I believe it is vital to look back and see how past eras processed their crises in order to move forward.

Teaching this pivotal era of Spanish art unlocks a profound understanding of how a nation constructed its modern identity through a turbulent period of revolution, empire loss, and cultural shifting. 

By exploring these specific genres, I aim to provide my students with a vivid roadmap of how art transitions from political propaganda to intimate social critique and global romantic myth-making.

Specifically, focusing on Spanish Romanticism allows us to explore:

- The raw emotional response to the political chaos, war, and shifting social structures following the Napoleonic era.

- The shift from objective reality to inner passion, tragedy, and the sublime, as epitomized by dark, dramatic masters like Francisco de Goya.

ANIMAL SYMBOLISM - ART AND THE MEDIEVAL MIND

Symbolic and magical thought were foundational to the medieval mindset, serving as a primary framework for understanding the universe. Symbols provided a way to connect with, and refer to, a higher, hidden, and sacred reality. In medieval theology, mastering and employing this symbolic language was considered a profound act of homage paid to the supreme being, God.

STARRY CHAPEL OF THE HOLY CHALIS

The old chapter house (built between 1356 and 1369 and known today as the Holy Grail Chapel) was originally where the canons met to discuss internal affairs. Today, it houses one of the most spectacular star vaults in Valencia. 

In 1496, when the nave was extended to link the Bell Tower and the Chapter House, the architect Pere Compte built the connecting corridor. Compte, who was employed by the House of Borgia, also designed La Lonja in Valencia and the Monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba in Alfauir near Gandia, where he created a magnificent Gothic spiral staircase, intricate sculptures, and the coffered ceilings of the upper cloister.

Flooring is often designed to be functional, but in the highest achievements of interior architecture, it becomes a canvas for master craftsmanship. The extraordinary wooden floor of the oratory (or Santa Capella) inside the Palau Ducal dels Borja in Gandia, Spain, serves as a prime example of how decorative art can elevate a sacred space.
