José Segrelles: The Forgotten Master of Dark Fantasy Reclaims Valencia

A MAJOR EXHIBITION at Valencia's Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània (CCCC) is resurrecting the legacy of José Segrelles (1885 to 1969). 

Running from September 25, 2026, to January 10, 2027, "José Segrelles. El ilustrador fantástico" features 155 original masterpieces, including 60 never-before-seen works. 

This monumental showcase marks a true homecoming for a visionary artist who split his time between international metropolitan capitals and his self-designed, historic home-studio in Albaida, Valencia.

LECTURE - 19th-Century Spanish Orientalist Movement - Tuesday, 27, OCT.2026 - 11:00 H

This lecture will explore the explosive, sun-drenched world of 19th-century Spanish painting, where high-stakes North African geopolitics collided with a revolutionary art movement. Our objective is to tear down the myth of Orientalism as mere romantic fantasy. Instead, we will reveal how a daring generation of artists weaponised their canvases to build a fierce new Spanish identity—dangerously bridging modernising Europe and Spain’s own exotic, Islamic heritage in Al-Andalus.

We plunge into the lives of five master painters who risked everything on the front lines and in expatriate studios: Mariano Fortuny, Francisco Lameyer, Antoni Fabrés, Josep Tapiró, and Ulpiano Checa. To understand their obsession, we will decode how 19th-century academics classified Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt as the Near East. Forget the dark, dusty studio fantasies of northern European Romantics; these Spanish masters chased the blinding, unforgiving Mediterranean sun to capture raw reality.

Spanish history is often taught through a traditional sequence of battles, borders, and treaties, which provides a top-down view of political power. 

However, examining Spanish fine arts offers a deeper, bottom-up perspective by capturing the psychological anxieties, cultural identity, and daily realities of the people who lived through these historical transformations.

Madrid's School of Romantic Artists - Eugenio Lucas Velázquez (1817–1870) painted this artwork in Madrid, Spain, around 1855. He produced this small-scale easel canvas for his own personal satisfaction and creative exploration. Throughout the 1850s, he routinely turned his attention to the darker margins of society, using uncommissioned works to explore themes of institutional isolation and raw human emotion that official state portraiture suppressed.

The Original Punk Insurrection: The School of Madrid Romanticism

Long before modern punk used an aggressive, anti-establishment ethos and raw energy to rebel against the status quo, the 19th c. School of Madrid Romanticism utilised its paintbrushes to launch a fierce visual insurrection against the state-approved elite art world. Rather than escaping into idealised historical myths or sterile neoclassicism, these painters confronted the volatile, gritty realities of their immediate surroundings. 

Execution by Garrote [El garrote vil] 

Eugenio Lucas Velázquez (1817–1870) painted this artwork in Madrid, Spain, in 1860. Produced during a mature period when he was heavily preoccupied with the darkest thematic elements of Spanish history, he created this piece entirely independent of institutional patrons.

ANIMAL SYMBOLISM - ART AND THE MEDIEVAL MIND

Symbolic and magical thought were foundational to the medieval mindset, serving as a primary framework for understanding the universe. Symbols provided a way to connect with, and refer to, a higher, hidden, and sacred reality. In medieval theology, mastering and employing this symbolic language was considered a profound act of homage paid to the supreme being, God.

STARRY CHAPEL OF THE HOLY CHALIS

The old chapter house (built between 1356 and 1369 and known today as the Holy Grail Chapel) was originally where the canons met to discuss internal affairs. Today, it houses one of the most spectacular star vaults in Valencia. 

In 1496, when the nave was extended to link the Bell Tower and the Chapter House, the architect Pere Compte built the connecting corridor. Compte, who was employed by the House of Borgia, also designed La Lonja in Valencia and the Monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba in Alfauir near Gandia, where he created a magnificent Gothic spiral staircase, intricate sculptures, and the coffered ceilings of the upper cloister.
