EL GRECO * MARCH 4TH & 7TH, 2014 * REGISTER NOW * DEADLINE MARCH 1ST

El Greco (1541 – 1614)
LECTURE OVERVIEW
Discover the Middle Ages in Spain through the visions and artworks of El Greco

****************************************
El Greco (1541 – 1614) was the most unusual painters of the 16th century. He developed a unique style of painting that became extremely popular with the church going Catholics of Spain, especially in Toledo.

El Greco could capture the “rapture” of faith in the eyes of his subjects like no other painter of his time. He was a master draftsman whose paintings combine courtly elegance with religious fervor. He intentionally distorted forms to emphasize the spiritual quality of a figure or event. His saints are ghostly creations of his imagination and his portraits of noblemen are elegant and realistic.

Through the study of El Greco, one discovers the historical and cultural foundations of Spain during its Middle Ages.
